Finally a winter coat

I talk through the unduly long process of making my first outer garment. A process that involved new-to-me techniques, a lot of dithering, a few daft mistakes and a lot of learning, about sewing, fabric, my body and myself.

For the project I used the Simplicity 1197 pattern, a reissue of a 1960s vintage coat pattern, and an overstock heavy wool fabric from Fabworks. The lining is a whole saga in its own right but the ultimate lining was a mix of Bremsilk Cupro off-cuts from my scrap box and some inexpensive cotton lawn from Dalston Mill Fabrics.

For hand sewing buttonholes I found this tutorial by The Yorkshire Tailor especially helpful. It’s not a quick view but if the aim is to work towards good technique, this is a very good step-by-step overview.

Another ‘epic’ garden project

After re-decking the “pit” and “path” (aka Tattie Alley) last year Mr M & I tackled another big renovation job in the garden before the growing season started: replacing the garden beds.

I explain the reasons for this project, both horticultural and physical, and as infrastucture changes are an opportunity to rethink inputs, outputs and processes I also talk about how personal and external factors are re-focusing my planting choices slightly. Finally, I share some of the delightful moments to be found in the less than exciting aspects of the job and probably confirm my batty eccentricity in the process…

In-between making

As so much energy has been devoted to big projects most of my other making falls into what I call “in-between making”: small projects, often driven by practical need and want but entirely satisfying in their own right.

My trio of in-between projects involved a mix of defaulting to tried and tested resources and something completely new.

The first two involved the Trellis Hat by Woolly Wormhead in Jamieson’s of Shetland‘s Heather wool and the Josie and Agnes Pants by Made My Wardrobe made from organic cotton jersey and elastic from the same company.

The third involved turning some foraged materials and linen thread into decorating brushes for the pottery studio. I based my brushes on the beautifully filmed demonstration-cum-tutorial by Sage Cortez, the potter behind Hand + Fire.
